    Summary of Sharpe

At the beginning of the series, Richard Sharpe (Sean Bean) is a sergeant in the 95th Rifles serving in Portugal in 1809. When he singlehandedly saves the life of General Sir Arthur Wellesley (David Troughton in the first two films, then Hugh Fraser for the following films) from a group of French cavalrymen, Wellesley gives Sharpe a battlefield commission, promoting him to lieutenant. Sharpe is placed in charge of a detachment of the 95th Rifles - a group of elite riflemen ("chosen men"), among them Sergeant Patrick Harper (Daragh O'Malley), who eventually becomes his best friend.

Sharpe is a British series of television dramas about Richard Sharpe, a fictional British soldier in the Napoleonic Wars. Sharpe is the hero of a number of novels by Bernard Cornwell; most, though not all, of the episodes are based on the books. Produced by Central Independent Television for the ITV network, the series was shot mainly in Turkey and the Crimea, although some filming was also done in England, Spain and Portugal.

Sharpe is a really fun video - the Sharpe genre is very entertaining and gives an intersting insight into a soldier's life during the Napoleonic era and beyond. This adventure, set in India at the time of the East India company, is like an old fashioned romp. The bad guys are really bad (lucious Toby Stephens!) and the good guys are great (salt of the earth Sean Bean). The main story is wonderfully set in a fortress in India; the scenery in majestic. The short about the making of the movie and the outtakes complement the movie wonderfully. Highly recommended for a cozy evening in front of the television!

Most Americans had never heard of Sharpe's Rifles before its debut on BBC America. Fortunately I have internet friends in the U.K. and asked them what they knew about the series. Several were huge fans and already had the collection. Several had recorded the series as it was shown. I decided to go ahead and purchase the boxed set and was very pleased when it arrived. The ammunition box case is a nice touch, the letter opener is balanced like a throwing knife and is really sharp :). The map of Napoleonic Europe during the Sharpe stories was very nice since most Americans know more about our Civil War than the Napoleonic period in Europe. The stories also prompted us to buy a few of the books by Bernard Cornwell.
